La prima ed unica esperienza al Mondiale calcistico del Canada risale al 1986: il portiere titolare era un certo Tino Lettieri, famosissimo nel Nordamerica per la sua eccentricità. Nato il [B] 27 settembre del 1957 a [C] Bari, ma cresciuto in Canada, ha sposato Michelle Nanne, figlia dell’hockeysta Lou Nanne col quale condivide la passione per l’hockey su ghiaccio: Tino giocò anche goaltender. Membro della Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame dal 2001.

The first and only Canadian experience at the football World Cup dates back to 1986: the goalkeeper of that squad was Tino Lettieri, famous in North America for his eccentricity. Born on [B] 27 September 1957 in [C] Bari, but grown up in Canada, he married Michelle Nanne, daughter of ice hockey Hall of Famer Lou Nanne: Tino also played goaltender. La Canadian Soccer Association afferma che egli nacque il [B] 27 settembre 1956 a [C] “Torito, Bari”, mentre il Canadian Olympic Committee propone un [B] 27 settembre 1957 a [C] “Torritti, Bari”. La Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame fornisce [B] 27 settembre 1957 come data di nascita e [C] Bari come luogo di nascita. Quanto al nome di battesimo nessuno dei tre si sbilancia, mentre secondo il web è chiaramente [A] “Martino”. La Canadian Soccer Association ci informa anche che la sua famiglia emigrò a Montréal quando aveva [D] tre mesi.

Taking a look on the Internet, you can notice that his date and place of birth are quite uncertain. Canadian Soccer Association says he was born on [B] 27 September 1956 in [C] “Torito, Bari”, while the Canadian Olympic Committee proposes [B] 27 September 1957 in [C] “Torritti, Bari”. The Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame provides [B] 27 September 1957 as date of birth and [C] Bari as place of birth. Regarding his birthname, any of the three propose anything, while for the www it’s clearly [A] “Martino”. The Canadian Soccer Association also tell us that his family emigrated to Montréal when he was [D] three months old.

He was born [A] Martire Lettieri (Martino was his grandfather), on [B] 27 September 1957 in [C] Toritto, province of Bari, from Francesco Lettieri and Arcangela Cataldo. His parents emigrated on 7 December 1957, when young Martire [D] still wasn’t three months old.

Note / Notes

Riguardo alla città di nascita, risulta evidente come la scelta fosse ristretta a due candidati: Bari e Toritto. Molti penseranno che non sia stato poi così difficile: bastava chiedere ad uno dei due comuni. In realtà, procedere per tentativi non è mai cosa saggia: in questo caso mi avrebbe fatto risparmiare una decina di giorni, ma in generale se la pista non è quella giusta o la fortuna ci volta le spalle, questo modo di procedere fa perdere settimane intere. Ho quindi dedicato qualche giorno ad una cernita delle fonti a disposizione, optando poi per il comune che pensavo fosse più probabile secondo l’analisi delle stesse.

Morale: Bisogna sempre contare sulla propria abilità, più che sulla fortuna.

Regarding the city of birth, it is apparent that the choice was restricted to two candidates: Bari and Toritto. Many people can think that it was not so difficult: just ask one of two municipalities. In fact, simply attempting is never a wise method: in this case I would have saved about ten days, but in general if you’re unlucky or you don’t have the right intuition, this approach can let you miss entire weeks. So, I spent a few days checking the available sources, then opting for the town that I thought was most likely to be the right one.

Moral: You must always rely on your skills, rather than luck.
